Decisions on foliage.

The last thing I have to decide in my Puma painting is the foliage. I've started in the top, right-hand corner and I'll make my way around, trying to enhance the painting. That is more important to me than highly detailed leaves.

Almost done....

I'm going to call it "Resting Puma" for lack of a better title. :)

New Projects :)

While I finish up the details on the puma, you might as well see what my next projects will be.
Two miniatures to be entered into the International Miniature Art Exhibit, in Saint-Nicolas, Quebec, Canada. These have to be finished by the middle of March. I consider then extras because it won't affect my large paintings. I do love doing miniatures for the fine detail work.

Both pieces will measure 2 1/2 x 3 1/2" in size. They will be framed.

So here is the first glimse of Suzie: (just a light drawing)

and this is the photo reference that I will be working from.

The second is a snowy owl: (another light drawing to start)

and the photo reference to work from:

At least they are something new to look at. :)

Well, that's it for tonight. Updates tomorrow.

Getting close.

I think just a few more sessions till I'm finished. Jan. has been really slow for me after having all my energy drained by the flu.

I'm slowly getting my energy back and my zeal for painting again.

Here is tonight's progress.

It may not look that different to you. As I add more details, the difference will be harder to see. I may just wait till the finished piece now.

Working to a finish...

I'm starting the finishing layer from the head out. Working to a finish (for me) means painting until I think the area is done. In my style of painting, that doesn't mean highly realistic. You can tell that I use colour straight from the tube. Sitting side by side, they give the illustion of mixing. A close up shows the colours better.

I am working toward the top of the head now, then will start from the neck down, then to the surrounding landscape.
Hopefully, everything will work together. :)

Preparing Custom Frame

I have to make the custom frame before I finish the picture background on the puma. I want them to compliment each other.
Step 1: Prepare the frame for painting.

Step 2: Put the frame and painting together to paint.

Step 3: Add a dark mixed background to the frame. I just started adding the lighter top colour when I remembered to take a photo.

Step 4: Top lighter colour, greens and gold/yellow/browns.

Step 5: I have to decide whether to paint the outer and inner edge plain white or plain black. I'll decide after I finish the puma.
Now I can continue the puma painting and have the frame as a colour comparison. :)
More tomorrow.

So far, so good.

I'm pleased with my progress considering I am still getting back into the swing of things after my flu virus.

Here is the supper update. I'll continue this evening.

Adding foliage before I go farther on the puma.

Late night on the Puma

I'm feeling almost human again but got a late start to painting tonight, so here is the first post of the day.

What is this you say.....

Take a look. The foliage on the right paw.

Starting to work on the nose and chest areas and heading toward it's back legs.

More to come.....

The Flu Runs it's course.

Tues. Jan. 9th:

After 8 days of the intestinal flu raging through my house, I think I can get back to painting tonight. I've had it a total of 4 days but I can think again, so I think I'll try and get back on track with the artwork. I'll post an update late tonight.

Late Night Update: FINALLY, an update! I can think long enought to paint again. Here is what the Puma looks like so far. What should I call it??? Something about shadows blending in? Resting?

I just realized that the right foot turns in the foliage and so I am painting toes on that leg.

Ah, the joys of winter...

Oh yes, winter is here and all the viruses that go with it! I have spent the last 3 days, mopping up, sterilizing and trying to prevent the rest of the family from getting the dreaded stomach flu.

I have a few quiet moments right now. In the next ten minutes, I expect to see a body blur past heading for the bathroom. After which, I will have to don the rubber gloves for yet another cleaning. Sigh.

You will have to bear with me as my sleep has been in fits and starts, and my mind is numb with Javex fumes. At the first sign of improvement, I will grab the paintbrush. I promise. Cross my heart with rubber gloves. :)
