Step 3: The Horse Gift

Step 3 is all about covering the panel with my own paint. I started with a very dark blue to outline the draft horse and make it pop out from the background. With a hard edged line I was able to catch my drawing mistakes before painting.

I then covered the purple almost exactly as the background colour but it will become barn and yard later on.

I changed the dark blue on the left to dark green grass. It will have to be lightened after the horse is close to being finished.

Then I put in the sunset sky and clouds, very loosely just to cover the panel.

The only part of the panel NOT covered with paint is the horse. You can see how the design fits in with the original colours.

You can see my studio is tiny. Just a 4 foot area in the middle of the living room. It allows me to expand as I need to, depending on the size of my canvas. I have many sizes of easels that can be set up beside the painting desk. For this size of painting, 16" x 16" I am using my french portable easel just sitting on the desk.

The nice thing about acrylics is using them inside the house and being able to paint any time I have a few minutes. No smell. :)
